Watch for a solid record of returns, rather than funds showing spurts of great years followed by fits of lousy ones. Compare the funds returns to a relevant benchmark index, (large-cap vs. S&P 500, small-cap to the Russell Index, etc.) Solid funds should not only consistently beat the benchmarks, they should also beat their peers.
Mutual funds are no doubt the best way to invest. Just study the market and understand your options. If you do your research, you will be able to pick a fund that will benefit you in the long run. Investigate the company and know what you are getting into. Do not leap before you look first. You may end up getting less than what you bargained for it you do.
Many investors try to play the game of picking individual stocks rather than picking solid mutual funds and then often wonder why they experience both difficulty and stress making money in the stock market. I tell investors that they should not be afraid to own individual stocks if they are willing to take the time to learn enough about the individual company or stock to make a rational businessman`s decision. And do not forget about valuation.
Along with the increased buying and selling activities of an active manager comes a higher expense charge for those trading and management costs. Most actively managed funds have a 50 to 100% higher operating expense ratio than the average index fund. If you are not getting better returns, this can cost plenty over time. Also if your quality manager leaves the fund, you may need to find a better alternative.
There are websites that can provide you with daily, monthly and historical mutual fund data. You can also view the performance charts of a particular fund and compare funds against each other. This is an easy way to find the one that is best for you.
However, having real property as an investment does not mean you do not manage it. What do I mean? You have to be responsible and manage your equity that your home accrues and if you have investment properties, you have to manage those properties like an investment portfolio with precision planning so that it does not create a negative cash flow because cash is king. In the business world, businesses that fail to manage their cash flow properly often fail to survive. Similarly, where individuals or families fail to manage their cash flows properly they end up in the same place, bankruptcy court.
