Stay Out of the Money Market Fund or Stable Value Funds - such funds are great if you are building an emergency cash reserve or saving for your summer vacation, but if your investment time horizon is long, putting your money in such vehicles is a poor decision. When the price is below the average you use, be in the Money Market, or stable value option that does not lose money! Move your investments to the stable option as soon as the indexes and funds move below the average you use.
Picking mutual funds is a challenging task. You will need to spend time learning, researching, investigating, analyzing, and comparing. The key is to develop your own methodology using some of the components listed here along with your own judgment and decision capabilities. Review your investment plan and fund selection criteria at least once a year. Make sure the plan still matches your goals and the funds match your expectations.
Ask you financial adviser to show you the fund ratings or do your own research if they will not. Otherwise find yourself a good Fee-Only financial adviser that gets paid to provide you with these top fund choices and help you invest in the "best of the best" no-load funds without any conflicts of interest.
Here is what I think you should consider doing. First unless you are a real expert, consider buying Index Funds, as opposed to investing in funds that carry a high load, or sales charge associated with them. If you pay a big commission, you simply have less dollars in the investment to work with. Studies show that for most mutual funds, the commission or load simply is not worth it. Do not let a good or even a great salesman talk you into a load fund, unless you have checked for yourself, that the returns over several different periods of time have been outstanding.
These are just two of several companies that provide ratings on these funds. Research them and take the time to evaluate the past performance before going with one of these companies for investment advice. When you rely on fund ratings to provide the needed investment information you should be sure to look at more than one ratings system. You want to follow the ratings company that has the most successful record of predicting the future potential of mutual funds.
Mutual funds also cost less. You do not have to spend a lot of money to purchase them like you may have to with a single stock purchase. Plus, you can invest small amounts at any time with no trading costs. If you have decided to invest in a mutual fund, there is one problem. There are well over 10,000 funds available so which one to go with. Before you actually invest in a mutual fund get a prospectus from the company. The prospectus will tell you about the fund including the funds goals and how the goals will be achieved, along with a chart of past performance and fees.
