When considering housing expenses, you may be over your limit. An average target is 35%. If you own your home, you ca not just sell it and move back with Mom and Dad to save money and refinancing may cost you more in closing costs than you are actually saving. If you need a little extra in one part take it from another. Reduce some of your more flexible expenses like a cell phone bill or clothing costs. Find a less expensive plan and shop the sales at the department stores.
Transport is another issue to consider. Whilst many people simply would not consider losing their car completely, it is certainly worth thinking about using it a whole lot less. The car may be useful for the monthly shop, but for shorter trips it could be better to walk or take the bus instead.
It can be easy to become accustomed to a certain way of life and assume that to spend any less money would mean having to make major sacrifices, hence making life less enjoyable. The rest is occupied by various categories of expenses. The first category of expenses is housing expenses which include the following subcategories: Property (mortgage/rent/property tax), Utilities (Gas, Water, Electricity), Phone, TV and Internet.
If you are in financial difficulty, then debt consolidation by refinancing your home can be a good idea. But beware of refinancing your home to 100% of its equity. If you do this to the full extent of your home equity, then it will be quite some time before you are able to raise future funds against your property, if they are needed. This will leave you with no emergency financial cushion. And it will take a few years for your finances to stabilize once more. Find out what the law is where you live. Some states will not allow you to borrow more than 80% of the value of your home.
